Student Outcomes

While lifelong learning is a journey, daily and weekly instruction demands a destination that demonstrates student proficiency. Our design process begins with the end in mind. It is imperative that the outcome (summative assessment) for each unit is created before instruction begins. Derived from Standards, an Enduring Understanding, and Essential Questions, the outcome is designed to rigorously demonstrate a student's proficiency of the content and skills at the end of the unit. Creating and articulating this destination at the beginning of a unit brings clarity to everyone in the classroom about the final destination and justifies every decision and activity in the instructional design. By establishing the outcome, the design process can anticipate the concepts, vocabulary, and skills necessary for student success, simultaneously giving us permission to exclude activities/skills that while good on their own merit do not support the destination.
